The Prophet ﷺ said, “The supplication of everyone is granted as long as he does not show haste and does not say that he made a supplication but it was not accepted,” Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi, Ibn Majah |
Du'aa
Du'aa are supplications, invocations or prayers which we direct to the All-Mighty Allah. Du'aa is to ask from Allah for something that you want or need.
There are numerous authentic du'aa which were used frequently by our prophet Muhammad ﷺ and which varied for many different kinds of occasions. The many different du'aa he used in supplication are noted in the Hadith, and are sourced from Qur'an, as well as through divine inspiration.
It is Sunnah to make du'aa. Sunnah means the model --words, deeds, actions, behaviors-- of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, whose actions we strive to emulate. Making regular du'aa is one of the many excellent ways for Muslims to increase their good deeds.

As the language of our Prophet ﷺ and the Qur'an is the Arabic language, the sunnah du'aa are in Arabic. It is admittedly difficult for a new Muslim to learn a foreign language for practicing his/her religion, however, there is great reward for you in doing so (Click here for more about this). Whatever you do, DO NOT feel at all that if you do not know how to say something in the Arabic language that you cannot ask from Allah! On the contrary, you can ask in your own language as well (see above link previous paragraph). Allah SWT is the Most Merciful and knows what is in our hearts.

When are some of the best times to make Du'aa?....
|
Notes on the Du'aa below:
- You will notice some of the du'aa are recited in almost a singing (for lack of a better word) voice; these are du'aa derived directly from the words in the Qur'an. They are recited this way because Muslims are told to recite Qur'an with a beautified voice. Other du'aa listed here which are recited in a speaking voice are not taken out of the Qur'an, but rather were said by the Prophet (SAW).
- Also included in this list are some adhkaar أذکار (plural) / dhikr ذکر (singular); these are phrases said which praise Allah SWT and are different from du'aa in that they don't ask for anything. * Indicates dhikr
- When in doubt, and/or until you have the chance to learn the sunnah du'aa for a particular occasion, you can say "Bismillah" before commencing any action.
Duaa Before Eating or Drinking
"Allahumma bariklanaa feema razaqtanaa wa qinaa athaabannar bismillah" Which means:
"O Allah! Bless us on everything You give us, and avoid us from Hellfire. And with the name of Allah." OR simply say "Bismillah" |
--->If you forget to say this du'aa before eating, you can say "Bismillahi fee awwalihi wa akhirihi," which means: "In the Name of Allah, in the beginning and the end."
|
Ayat al-Kursi (a verse in Qur'an); Du'aa to be recited in Morning, Afternoon, before sleeping and MORE!
"Allahu la ilaha illa Huwa, Al-Haiyul-Qaiyum La ta'khudhuhu sinatun wa la nawm, lahu ma fis-samawati wa ma fil-'ard Man dhal-ladhi yashfa'u 'indahu illa bi-idhnihi Ya'lamu ma baina aidihim wa ma khalfahum, wa la yuhituna bi shai'im-min 'ilmihi illa bima sha'a Wasi'a kursiyuhus-samawati wal ard, wa la ya'uduhu hifdhuhuma Wa Huwal 'Aliyul-Adheem" Regarding Ayat al-Kursi, the Prophet ﷺ said, "It is equal to a quarter of the Qur'an." |
This ayah means:
"Allah! None has the right to be worshiped but He, the Ever Living, the One Who sustains and protects all that exists. Neither slumber nor sleep overtakes Him. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is he that can intercede with Him except with His Permission? He knows what happens to them (His creatures) in this world, and what will happen to them in the Hereafter. And they will never compass anything of His Knowledge except that which He wills. His Kursi extends over the heavens and the earth, and He feels no fatigue in guarding and preserving them. And He is the Most High, the Most Great," Surah al-Baqarah 2:255.
|
*General Praising of Allah SWT
“Subhanallah wa beehamdi he.” سُبْحَانَ اللّهِ وَ بِحَمْدِهِ Which means: “Glory be to Allah and all praise is due to Him.” |
---> A person who recites these words 100 times in the morning and in the evening could not bring anything better than this on the Day of Resurrection except the one who utters these words more often. (Hadith)

Du'aa upon Entering One's Home
Allahumma inni As’aluka khaira almoolyji wa khaira almakhraji bismillahi walajna wa ala Allahi Rubbana tawa kelna Which means: "O Allah, I seek a good entry and a good exit. We take Allah's name to enter and to exit and rely on Him who is our Lord. ***Printable du'aa above (under Du'aa upon Leaving Home) |
Note: In a hadith narrated by Jaabir (R.A.), the Prophet ﷺ stated that when a man enters his home and makes Dhikr (remembers Allah) and also makes Dhikr at meal times, then Satan says to his colleagues that the night cannot be spent there nor can they partake of the peoples food and if no Dhikr was made on entering the house, then Satan says to his colleagues that they have an opportunity to spend the night there and if no Dhikr was made at meal times, then Satan tells his colleagues that they will be able to stay there and also get food.

Du'aa on Entering the Toilet
”Allahumma Inni A’oozu bika minal Khubthi wal Khabaa’ith” اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْخُبْثِ وَالْخَبَائِثِ Which means: “O Allah. I seek refuge in You from the male female evil and Jinns" |
When the Prophet ﷺ would intend to enter the toilet, he would say this du'aa. It says in hadith that between the eyes of Shaytan and the private parts of man Bismillah is a barrier, therefore this du'aa should be recited.

Allaahumma Rabba haathihid-da 'watit-taammati wassalaatil qaa'imati, 'aati Muhammadanil-waseelata walfadheelata, wab 'ath-hu maqaamam-mahmoodanil-lathee wa'adtahu, ['innaka laa tukhliful-mee'aad] اللَّهُمَّ رَبَّ هَذِهِ الدَّعْوَةِ التَّامَّةِ، وَالصَّلَاةِ الْقَائِمَةِ، آتِ مُحَمَّداً الْوَسِيلَةَ وَالْفَضِيلَةَ، وَابْعَثْهُ مَقَاماً مَحْمُوداً الَّذِي وَعَدْتَهُ، [إَنَّكَ لَا تُخْلِفُ الْمِيعَادَ] Which means: O Allah, Lord of this perfect call and established prayer. A'oothoo billahi minash shaytahn irrajeem أَعُوذُ بِاللَّهِ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيمِ Which means: "I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Satan". |
Reported by Sulaiman bin Surad (RA): I was sitting with the Prophet ﷺ when two men began to quarrel and curse each other and the face of one of them turned red and the veins of his neck were swollen (from rage). The Prophet (SAW) said, “I know of a word, if he were to utter that, his rage would vanish and that is: A`oothu billahi minash-Shaitan nir-rajim (I seek refuge with Allah from Satan, the accursed).” [Bukhari & Muslim] |

Du'aa for Breaking Fast
Allahumma inni laka sumtu wa bika aamantu wa ‘ala rizq-ika aftarthu اللهم إني لك صمت, وبك آمنت, وعلى رزقك أفطرت O Allah I fasted for You and I believe in You and I break my fast with Your sustenance. |
It is preferred for the fasting person to not delay in breaking the fast once the sun has set. Anas b. Mâik narrates that the Prophet ﷺ used to break his fast with fresh dates before going to [Maghrib] prayer. When fresh dates were unavailable, he would break his fast with dried dates. When dried dates were unavailable, he would take a few sips of water (Sunan Abî Dâwûd 2356) |

You are the best in refining. You are its Helper and Master. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from knowledge which is not beneficial, a heart that is not submissive, a soul that is not contented and a supplication that is not answerable. |
The Prophet (SAW) said: Have Taqwa (Fear) of Allah [Be pious] wherever you may be, and follow up a bad deed with a good deed which will wipe it out, and behave well towards the people. |
