Kimberly's Conversion Story

Assalamualaykum

My name is Kimberly, and I reverted to Islam in April 2011. I grew up as a Christian, but I never practised it. Religion did interest me though. In college, I began to study the history of Christianity and was fascinated. Not because it made me believe in it, but because it verified my belief that Christianity was not right. My professor asked all of her students to attend a seminar on Islam as an extra course credit so I went for that. The speaker was a professor from Egypt and he spoke so eloquently about Islam and peace. This was in 2006 and I had yet to hear anything positive about Islam until that day. Alhamdulillah for that man because he forever changed my perception of Muslims and Islam.

In the fall of 2010, I watched a documentary made by National Geographic that let Muslims speak for themselves about their faith. This was the first time I had heard Muslim women describe how great it is to be Muslim. I started reading, and reading and reading and reading. I was laid off work so I would go to the library and read about Islam all day. The more I read the more I realised I needed to become a Muslim. It was unbelievable how many books I read. Finally, I mustered up the courage to get myself a Qur’an and whenever I felt depressed I would read the Qur’an. It was as if it was written just for me. It made me feel at peace instantly to read it.

Finally, I searched online for the closest masjid and found an Islamic school close to my house. I just went to talk to someone. I needed to talk to Muslims. There was this need propelling me forward and luckily I was able to talk to an imam that day.

After talking with him, I knew I was ready to say the Shahadah. The imam organised 4 or 5 witnesses (teachers at the school) and I said the Shahadah. I instantly felt like I was a part of something so much bigger than myself. I was filled with joy! The sisters let me go to the school to learn to pray with the children for Zuhur prayer. I volunteered in the school cafeteria until the end of the year since I was unemployed and they taught me so much.

I am forever grateful to everybody at that school for helping me in my transition to Islam. Insha’Allah my journey forward in Islam will be blessed. Alhamdulillah for Islam!

Kimberly H.
